WNYLUG will be holding it’s next installfest / workshop on March 6th 2010 from 9:00am to 3:00pm at The Buffalo Hacker Space, 701 Seneca St, Suite 440, Buffalo NY 14210 (In the Larkin Building)

This event is being held to assist with Linux issues and to review topics we discussed at previous meetings.

If you have issues with Linux bring in your laptop or desktop (monitors, keyboards and mice will be provided so you can leave yours at home) and we can take a look at it.

Installs can also be performed if you want to try Linux out. (We are offering installations of the latest Ubuntu and Fedora distros)

Break-out groups covering various topics of interest may be held by individuals wanting to share.

Donations being accepted from individuals wanting Pizza for Lunch.

Richard Stallman, MIT presents “Copyright vs. Community”

Copyright developed in the age of the printing press, and was designed to fit with the system of centralized copying imposed by the printing press. But the copyright system does not fit well with computer networks, and only draconian punishments can enforce it.
The global corporations that profit from copyright are lobbying for draconian punishments, and to increase their copyright powers, while suppressing public access to technology. But if we seriously hope to serve the only legitimate purpose of copyright–to promote progress, for the benefit of the public–then we must make changes in the other direction.

Stallman launched the GNU Project and initiated the free software movement years before others even thought about ‘open software’. Don’t miss the Fidel Castro of Computer Science !

Two prominent community members, Dusty and ralvez have been working hard to bring Arch Linux it’s very own conference. ArchCon 2010 will take place in Toronto, Canada’s largest city, on July 22 and 23. Registration is now open at http://archcon.archlinux.ca/ and more information can be found on the ArchCon site at http://archlinux.ca/archcon2010/.

ArchCon will feature talks and tutorials from prominent community members and plenty of interactive discussions, development sprints, bug squashing sessions, and, of course, socializing.

Earlybird registration ends on February 28th. Those who register early will be doing the organizers a huge favour by helping estimate the number of attendees, and to finance initial costs.
