I installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my home PC and Fedora 10 as a VM on my laptop at the install fest last week. Both installs went smoothly and I had originally not planned on having Ubuntu as a VM on my laptop but that has now changed.
As a Linux newbie it makes sense for me to have an Ubuntu VM available on my laptop. Coming from a strictly Windows environment it seems a bit more friendly than Fedora and may ultimately serve as a bridge between the two. As I become more adept in Linux I can start dabbling in Fedora with the intention of eventually being able to take advantage of the cutting edge technologies that take a while longer to work themselves into an Ubuntu distro.
Meanwhile, I am looking forward to using some of the things I was exposed to earlier today in Ubuntu like the Synaptec (spelling??) Package Manager for pulling down new (and removing unwanted) packages.
Oh, rumor has it that Ubuntu 8.10 also has mesh networking capabilties like Fedora which really intrigues me. I wonder if there is any value in creating an appliance that can be installed in your car and constantly looks for other ‘meshers’ within its range (~ 300 ft radius I think). If so this could potentially provide for a moving, self sustaining network enabling communication between nearby vehicles. Props to Neal for mentioning (to me) his idea of cars communicating with each other.
If nothing more, it could bring road rage solidly into the 21st century…
You’ve got to be kidding, right? Nearly ALL of my clubs or meetings have selected Wednesdays for their schedule! Why not Thursday or Tuesdays?
I also sent this to the mail list, but I understand that is not working well.
I just thought some of you might find the following from slashdot of interest. Some of the comments are interesting. (I’m NOT posting this to dis Ubuntu!)
